Obituary

SPRINGFIELD – Charles Zimmerman, 87, passed away Tuesday, June 11, 2024, at his home.

He was born January 19, 1937 to Edward and Verna (Ziegler) Zimmerman. He married Margaret "Marggie" Maddison on December 28, 1956. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marggie; his brother, Melvin; and his sister, Edith McCormick.

He is survived by his children, Gary (Kathy) Zimmerman, Greg (Tonya) Zimmerman and Shelly (Brian) Rodgers; his grandchildren, Zac and Tyler Zimmerman, Desiree Sayne, Devin and Kayla Zimmerman, Brad Rodgers and Morgan Hinson; and his great-grandchildren, Berkley and Avery Sayne, Kaia, Brantley, Thomas and Maya Zimmerman, and Leland and Rosalie Hinson.

Chuck was a Small Arms Instructor in the U.S. Air Guard. He worked in floor covering for 21 years and retired from Illinois Secretary of State Security.

He was a founding member and former elder of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Rochester.

Chuck owned many classic cars over the years including a 66 Mustang, a 59 T-Bird and multiple Corvettes. He shared his car passion with his brother. They enjoyed attending Bloomington Gold together yearly and they drove their Corvettes together on the Indy 500 track.

Chuck was a long-term member of the Reisch Brew Crew. He loved the monthly meetings, the members and the beer. When it was decided to start brewing it again with the proceeds being given to charity, Chuck went with a group to Potosi to participate for the first time in 53 years, the brewing and canning of Reisch beer. Chuck could also be found many mornings having breakfast with his buddies at the Cozy Dog.

Chuck was a man who loved his family and encouraged them always. He loved and enjoyed spending as much time as possible with his kids, grandkids, and great grandkids. They always brought a smile to his face.

Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until the start of the service at 12 p.m. Tuesday, June 18, 2024 at Vancil-Murphy Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery.
