SPRINGFIELD – Doris Joann Anderson, 91, passed away Sunday, February 12, 2023, at Springfield Memorial Hospital, surrounded by family.
She was born in Douthat, OK on September 2, 1931, to Sterling and Dorothy (Cooper) Smotherman. She married Billy Ray Anderson on November 12, 1950. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; sister, Wanda June (Smotherman) Ford; two nieces; four nephews; numerous brothers and sisters-in-law; and her loyal pup, Max.
Joann was part of the Christian Church of Pitcher, OK for the first few decades of her life, until she moved to Springfield, where she attended Elm Street Christian Church. Her husband, Bill, served in Alaska during the Korean War with Joann at his side, braving Alaskan winters.
Joann worked as a bookkeeper throughout her life. She worked for U. S. Metal in Miami, OK. She and her family moved to Springfield in December, 1970. She then worked at Bookkeepers, Myers Brothers Department Store, Concordia Lutheran Seminary and Stewart Warner Hobbs Corporation, where she also ran the employee credit union. Joann retired from Hobbs in 1993.
She was an avid reader who loved murder mysteries, especially Agatha Christie. She and her favorite guy, Bill, loved to dance, and she enjoyed jigsaw puzzles. Later in life, Joann was often found doing puzzles, or playing Mahjong or Color by Number.
She is survived by her son, Terry J. Anderson, wife, Kelly; grandchildren, Meghan Anderson, Ethan Anderson, and grand-nephews, Allen Cook and Owen Cook, both of whom also called her grandma; sister, Carole Jane (Smotherman) Lane, husband, Burl; and numerous nieces and nephews and extended family, including Stacie Cook, Mark Cook and Kristin Cook.
A visitation will be held from 2:00 p.m. until time of service at 4:00 p.m., Sunday, February 19, 2023, at Vancil-Murphy Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held at 9 a.m. on Monday, February 20, 2023, at Camp Butler National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the family of Joann Anderson.
