SPRINGFIELD, IL – Dr. G. Fredrick Guzasky, 71, passed away Sunday, June 19, 2022, at Springfield Memorial Hospital.

He was born in Oak Park, Illinois on May 23, 1951.

Dr. Guzasky was an organist, composer, and teacher, whose musical venues have extended from college teaching in Boston, to various churches in the Boston area and the position of Director of Music and Liturgy at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Springfield. In Boston, he had been a professor at Bridgewater State University and an Affiliated Artist at MIT in Cambridge. As a recitalist, he performed in New England and the Midwest, as well as Russia, Latvia, and England, receiving the Boston University Outstanding Performance Award. He toured Russia and Latvia, and was widely known for his masterful organ performances. Some of his specialties include Gregorian chant, Russian Orthodox choral music, and the organ works of Josef Gabriel Rheinberger. He recorded a number of compact discs and has written books concerning Gregorian chant, organ technique and performance, and a mystery novel. Dr. Guzasky was also director of the Slava Russian Chorale.

He is survived by his partner, Josh Collins; and his cat, Natasha.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 25, 2022, at St. Anthony's Greek Orthodox Church, with Reverend Father George Pyle officiating. A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 29, 2022, at The Gardens Cemetery in West Roxbury, Massachusetts.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Anthony's Greek Orthodox Church.
