Gregory Bruce
Murray
d. Jan 20, 2025
Springfield
Leaving a monumental void in the hearts of many, Gregory Bruce Murray, 76, of Springfield, IL, died on January 20, 2025.
Those fortunate (or, in the case of some students, unfortunate) enough to cross his path knew him as a man of delightful contradiction—the most generous, cantankerous old fart that ever existed. He lived for fantastical stories, great music, and a strong cup of coffee.
Born in 1948 in Galesburg, IL, he served in the Navy during Vietnam before receiving his MA later in life from Western Illinois University. He then taught English at Missouri State University and Lincoln Land Community College, where he touched the lives of thousands. At his core, Greg believed in the importance of "found family" and "paying it forward," which he epitomized in the relationships he formed with friends, adopted students, even his favorite servers. The hardest thing in this world is to live in it, and for those he left behind, it's hard to imagine living in this world without him. May his spirit roam the halls of LLCC, forever haunting students who didn't do the reading.
He is survived by: his daughters Jessica, Rachael (Omar), Sara (Josh), and Bekki (Wyatt); sister, Judy; grandchildren, Goethe, Saleh, Azrael, and Wesley; his brother from another mother and father, lifelong best friend, Michael (Leah). He was preceded in death by his parents, Dale and Marie, and his sister, Deanna.
