SPRINGFIELD, IL – Herbert C. Duerr, Sr., 89 (or 90 in Herb years), passed away peacefully at 9:29 am, November 17, 2017 , at Memorial Medical Center surrounded by his wife and family.

He was born July 1, 1928 , to Adolph and Flossie (Miller) Duerr.  He married Frances "Tootie" Dunlevy in Springfield on Thanksgiving Day, November 24, 1949 , and for nearly 67 years their commitment to each other was unwavering.  They lovingly raised 4 children, and were blessed with 5 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Beverly "Jeanie" Vincent; grandson, Ronald G. Scattergood; sisters, Peggy Kelly and Norma Jean Duerr.

Herb served on the Village Board and was the former Mayor and Police Chief of Southern View. He retired from the Illinois Department of Mental Health in 1992, after 30 years of service. Anyone who knew Herb was familiar with his countless humorous stories, quick wit and the never-ending stream of quotes he had in his arsenal to sum up any situation or event. A few favorites were "Just charge it to the dust and let the rain settle it" or "We all live by the Golden Rule...Them's with the Gold, rule."  "Might as well be here as where I'm at!"  He was funny, loyal and always frugal, insightful, teaching and giving, stubborn and a wee bit ornery, but above all he was a man of integrity.  Living during the depression when deals were consummated with a handshake and a promise, his word was his bond. He brought his children up to understand the value of a dollar and that you have to earn your way in this life, and not expect things to be handed to you. He loved his family with all his heart, as they loved him in return. His passing leaves a void that no one, no time, and no amount of tears can repair.

He is survived by his wife, Tootie, children, Herbert II (Naomi), Stacey Scattergood, Teri (Bob) Casson; brother, Kenneth Duerr; sister, Shirley Coville; grandchildren, Cortney (Darrell) Sims, Brian Scattergood, Jaime Casson (Michael Orama), and Tanner Vincent; and great-grandchildren, Morgan, Dalton, Sammie, Dayton and Raygan.
