SPRINGFIELD, IL – James A. Johnston, 76, crossed over to the Creator's next world at 3:14 p.m. on March 18, 2022.
He was born May 29, 1945, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, was a lifelong Cheesehead and son of James M. and Margaret (Birch) Johnston. He married Pamela (Schmidt) Rudin in April 1982, in Springfield.
Jim is survived by his wife, Pam; sons, Ryan (Rebecca) Johnston and Christopher (Allison) Rudin; daughter-in-law, Rebecca Rudin; grandchildren, Eli, Liam and Aspen Rudin; and Landon and Evan Hagerman; brother, Don (Sue) Johnston; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents and son, Benjamin Rudin.
Jim graduated from Washington High School (1964) and the University of Illinois School of Architecture. He owned James A. Johnston and Associates for over 25 years. He also was an accomplished artist and photographer. He was a founding board member of Downtown Springfield, Inc. and founder of Sustainable Springfield, Inc. He was a scout master for Boy Scout Troop 2 and twice president of Sertoma Club.
Jim was of the Baha'i Faith and was very active in the Baha'i community. He was also active in the American Indian community.
Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until the time of service at 12 p.m. Friday, March 25, 2022, at Vancil-Murphy Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Baha'i Faith or Springfield Art Association.
