Obituary

James W. "Jim" Martin, 79, passed away at Villa Health Care East in Sherman, IL on Sunday, October 1, 2023 after a long illness.

Jim was born and raised in Quincy, IL, lived a short time in Divernon, IL and Chatham, IL before moving to Springfield, IL.

He married Claudia Cathy (Wienhoff) Martin June 30, 1973 in Quincy, IL she survives. His two children, John Martin and Karen Martin, both live in Springfield, IL. He is also survived by two brothers, Thomas and Donald Martin, both of Quincy, IL; aunt, Norma Loos of Payson, IL; many nieces and nephews and grandnieces and grandnephews. His parents, William and Bertha Martin of Quincy, IL; sister-in-law, Beth Martin; a nephew, James "Jimmy" Wienhoff; and a grandnephew, Ryan Martin preceded him in death.

Jim retired from State of Illinois McFarland Mental Health Center in 2001 then worked as janitor for Lincoln Land Development at the Baptist Building in Springfield. He also worked for Electric Wheel in Quincy, IL for almost 20 years, and District 172 School District as a school bus driver before relocating to the Springfield area. He graduated Quincy Senior High and Completed Heating and Air Course at Quincy Technical School through John Wood College. He raised chickens for a while and attended numerous small animal auctions. He enjoyed working in his workshop making wood items, wind chimes and whirligigs. He was always trying something new. The last few years watching TV, observing the birds and antics of squirrels and bunny rabbits were his pastime activities.

At his request he was cremated and no gathering held. Private graveside service will be held at a future date with family at Greenmount Cemetery in Quincy, IL. Cremation rites were provided by Vancil-Murphy Funeral Home.
