SPRINGFIELD – James Dwight Smith, 89, passed away Wednesday, October 18, 2023, at Taylorville Skilled Nursing.

He was born March 17, 1934 to Clifford and Lillian (Barr) Smith. He married Sharon Kay Weedman on October 20, 1966 in Nokomis. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Robert Smith.

Jim was a U.S. Air Force veteran, serving in Korea and Japan. He was a gemologist and worked at Stout and Lauer Jewelers for many years.

He is survived by his wife, Sharon; daughter, Tonya (Rex) Packingham; grandsons, Taylor Roberts, Tanner (Jalynn) Roberts and Trevin Packingham; great-granddaughter, Luna Roberts; and brother, Joe Smith.

A memorial gathering will be held from 11 a.m. until 12 p.m. Wednesday, October 25, 2023, at Vancil-Murphy Funeral Home.

A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. at Camp Butler National Cemetery with Tonya Packingham officiating. Military honors will be rendered by the United States Department of Defense – Air Force and the Inter-Veterans Burial Detail of Sangamon County.
