J. Joy Beath was born on December 25th, 1929, in Peoria, IL.

She spent most of her childhood in Mason City, IL. Joy was married to her husband Everett, who was originally from Scotland, for 38 years. Joy and Everett lived in several cities while they were married, including Aurora, Rock Island, Galesburg, Decatur and Peoria as well as living in Marina del Rey, California which Joy described as a touch of Heaven on Earth.

Joy and her husband had two children, William (deceased) and Helen of Texas. Also surviving are her brother, Eldon Becker (Linda) of Florida; sister, Jessie of Illinois; one grandchild and four great-grandchildren.

Joy had various jobs over the years, including department store clerk, jewelry store clerk, restaurant worker, and bookkeeper.  She referred to herself as a "Jack of All Trades." She loved to stay busy and enjoyed traveling, reading, and gardening. Joy moved to King's Daughters Home in July 2001 and was assigned to Mary H. Blackstock Circle. She loved everything about the home, especially the people and her private room.

When the King's Daughter's Home closed in 2006, Joy moved to the Illinois Presbyterian Home, where she resided until her passing. Joy was always willing to lend a helping hand, and assisted with delivering the daily mail and other tasks at the home while she was still able.

Joy enjoyed reading, listening to music (especially jazz) and planting flowers. She loved cats and often attended the cat shows at the State Fairgrounds while she lived at the King's Daughters Home. She also was a food enthusiast. She enjoyed gourmet foods and frequently sought out tasty mustards. Joy loved to shop and often took the city bus to visit various shops around town.

While the loss of some of her independence due to vision, hearing and physical declines was challenging, Joy always remained positive and graciously found ways to rise above whatever situation she encountered. As has been said by many who had the privilege to know her, Joy was a joy to know.

A Memorial Service will be held on Monday, February 5, 2024, at 2:30 pm at Illinois Presbyterian Home.
