Karen Shanle, born in Tønder, Denmark, passed away on March 4, 2026. Karen was the daughter of Holger and Rigmor Petersen, both of whom preceded her in death. She grew up in Denmark alongside her brothers, Lars, who resides in Aarhus, and Jens, who is also deceased. While her life began in Denmark, Karen built a beautiful life in the United States after marrying her husband, Loren Shanle. Together, they shared 50 years of marriage. Loren also preceded her in death, along with their son, Lars Shanle. Karen is survived by her daughter, Erin Shanle (Josh Martin) of Rochester, Illinois and two grandchildren, Jenna Martin and Erik Martin.

A woman with a gentle spirit and a deep appreciation for knowledge and the world around her, Karen found happiness in gardening, nature, reading, and traveling. She was dedicated to working in the clinical laboratory at Memorial Medical Center for over 25 years. Karen will be remembered for her kindness, her bright and thoughtful presence, and the love and patience she poured into her family. A private service will be held. Those wishing to honor Karen may make a memorial donation to an organization supporting nature, education, or health - causes she loved deeply.
