SPRINGFIELD – Leslie "Les" A. Hughes, 82, passed away Tuesday, February 6, 2024, at his home.

He was born September 12, 1941 to Onie Leslie and Ruby Maye Hughes. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Ronald H. Hughes, Sr.; and daughter, Lori Hughes.

Les was a veteran of the Army National Guard. He previously worked as a draftsman for the State of Illinois and later was a police officer with the Springfield Police Department, retiring in 1995. He was an avid woodworker, gun collector and coin collector. He belonged to numerous coin clubs in Central Illinois.

He is survived by his sons, Michael (Molly) Hughes and Scott Hughes; companion, Veronica "Roni" Charles; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and two nephews.

Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until the time of service at 11 a.m. Monday, February 12, 2024, at Vancil-Murphy Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Waverly East Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the National Kidney Foundation.
