Marcel Joseph Broccardo was born on April 25, 1936, and encircled by the love of his family, died peacefully on December 06, 2022. He was a beloved son, brother, cousin, husband, uncle, father, godfather, PaPa (grandfather) to many, Old PaPa (great-grandfather) to many more.

Marcel embodied the image of a proud Italian man. He had a compassionate heart, with a capacity for both love and complete forgiveness. He was a passionate golfer and always made time for 18-holes of golf whenever he could. He was the ultimate salesman–during his children's early years he interspersed parental discipline with Dale Carnegie tips and business guidance. He was a prolific story-teller, a music lover (especially Johnny Cash), an old coin collector, a dedicated Little League Baseball coach, and die-hard fan of late-night cowboy movies & detective shows on AMC. He played a mean game of solitaire and wiled away his evenings working crossword puzzles. He was a Honda Gold Wing rider and enjoyed many carefree days riding into the sunset with his wife, Terri.

Marcel was the first born of five children to Alfredo "Cub" and Catherine "Nene" Cioni Broccardo. As a toddler, he moved with his family from his birthplace of Kincaid, IL to Springfield, IL. Marcel was preceded in death by his treasured and caring parents, his beautiful sister, Mary Ann Broccardo (John) Peterman, his loyal and rambunctious sons, Mark Joseph Broccardo and Steven Marcel Broccardo (sons of Nancy Broccardo), his cherished brother-in-law, David Fafoglia, his fun-loving daughter-in-law, Connie (Hardwick) Broccardo, and his special bonus grandson, Colin Sullivan.

Marcel is survived by his loving spouse, Terri, his baby sister, Juliann (Jerry) Hughes, his brothers, Phillip (David) Broccardo and Raymond (Melissa) Broccardo, his daughter, Michele Broccardo, his bonus daughter, Robin (Mark) Hayes, his bonus son, Kenneth M. Barry (Debra), his bonus daughter, Margaret Campbell Eakins, and his bonus daughter-in-law, Judy Weitekamp Neal (Ira).

Marcel is also survived by many grandchildren and great-grandchildren who will truly miss him. Their "Old PaPa" brought an endless amount of joy and laughter into their lives. His grandchildren include: Jason (Lisa) Broccardo, Gabriella (Eric) Goodpasture, Aija Larry, Corinna House (Brandon), Dante Broccardo, Alexandria Broccardo, Morgan (Aadam) Cox, Devin (Sidnie) Hayes, Luke (Vanessa) Berry, Kari (Chris) Fumerola, and his great-grandchildren include: Olivia, Elliot, & Ian Broccardo, Ava Morris, Makayla, Parker, & Zoe House, Mick, Eli, and Giovanna Goodpasture, and Aubree & Aleena Cox.

Marcel's Cioni and Broccardo families reach from Illinois to Italy and beyond and includes cherished aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and godchildren around the world. Marcel was a loyal and trusted friend and will be remembered fondly by so many. He maintained a treasured life-long friendship with Sr. Celestine Rondelli of the Dominican Sisters of Illinois, and friendships with his former classmates of Cathedral Boys High School. When his health permitted, Marcel enjoyed attending a standing monthly lunch with his former classmates. His marriage to Nancy Vespa Broccardo blessed Marcel with Vespa, Welch, and Santarelli extended families. He cherished all his extended family members.

During Marcel's first two decades of life he grew up in the family business—Broccardo Brothers Bottling Company. Marcel worked hard his entire life. He earned his first dollar from his grandfather, Aurelio Cioni, at the age of 6. After leaving the family bottling company, Marcel was a highly successful salesman with Manhattan Coffee for many years. He continued his career in sales and service roles at Charles Chips, the United States Postal Service, and Smartvan Airport Shuttle Service. Marcel and his former wife Nancy owned and operated Marcel's Penny Bar Inn, a neighborhood bar well-known for it's 10,250 Lincoln Pennys set into an oak bar. Marcel's family and friends spent many nights at the Penny Bar enjoying live music, and a delicious menu that included Nancy's chilli, Gabe's famous barbeque, and famous Fish Fry Fridays.

After his retirement, Marcel became a country route driver for the State Journal-Register and was recognized as the Journal's oldest paperboy on record. He retired for a second time from the Journal at 83 years young. Marcel served in the United States Army and Illinois Army reserve and was honorably discharged on October 31, 1963.

Marcel enjoyed many hobbies, but nothing made him happier and prouder than spending time and sharing stories with his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, his family, and friends. Even though Marcel is moving on to the next chapter of his life, his legacy will continue and he will be a prominent figure of strength and support for his family. He is a true family patriarch and 'grandpa' to all. He will always be loved and remembered dearly by everyone who knew him. Marcel lives on in the colorful stories he shared and life lessons he passed on through his family. He will remain their favorite 'man in black' and loving grandpa in "an Italy hat".

During Marcel's final years he was challenged with health issues. His family will be forever grateful to the doctors, nurses, nursing assistants, phlebotomists, social workers, palliative care teams, housekeeping staff, dieticians, ER personnel, pharmacists, and community of people who cared for him during difficult times. Dr. Dennis Yap, Marcel's life-long doctor followed Marcel's care closely and ensured he was referred to the most-qualified specialists—his family is appreciative of each and every one. The staff of Memorial Hospital, Springfield Clinic, Bridge Care Suites, and Residential Home Health thoughtfully cared for Marcel both at home and in the hospital. They were endlessly entertained by his stories, sense of humor, and often acknowledged what a special man he was. Everyone in his circle of care treated Marcel with respect, empathy, dignity, and kindness.

Due to extreme health risks for many during this time, Marcel's memorial and prayer service will be held on Saturday, April 29, 2023 at 10:00 am at Oak Hill Cemetery, 820 S Cherokee St, Taylorville, IL.
