Mary Elizabeth "Betsy" Burton, 88, died peacefully Saturday, November 25, 2017, at Memorial Hospice at Heritage.

She was born October 6, 1929, in Springfield, the daughter of Florence C. and J.R. "Bud" Fitzpatrick. She attended Blessed Sacrament grade school, Sacred Heart Academy and Springfield College in Illinois.

Betsy married Thomas D. Burton in 1950 and their marriage was blessed with six children, James F. "JB" (Nancy) Burton of Springfield, Elizabeth D. "Libby" (Steve) Allen of Tallahassee, Florida, Thomas D. "TD" Burton of Springfield, Patricia C. "Pitty" (Mark) Scott of Chatham, Susan D. (Steve) Trutter and Robert P. (Kathy) Burton of Springfield.

She is also survived by ten grandchildren, Scott Allen, Brian Allen (Janell), Stephanie Allen (Antony Speed), Andrew Patterson (Engracia), Patrick Patterson, Molly Kelso, Sarah Trutter, Allison Trutter, Robert Burton and Abby Burton; three step-grandchildren; five great-grandchildren, Ariah and Debra Patterson, Lucia Patterson, Alexis and AJ Speed; four step great-grandchildren.

Betsy was preceded in death by her parents; brother, James R. Fitzpatrick and her husband.

Betsy and her husband, Tom, were the owners of a number of family operated businesses in the Springfield area, including the "A. Lincoln Wax Museum and General Store." She was a long-time member of Island Bay Yacht Club and this served as a centerpiece for her and her family for many years, especially during the time that the family resided at Lake Springfield. She was an avid bridge player and enjoyed conversations surrounding politics and history. Her quick wit and words of wisdom will be an everlasting memory for her family and friends.

Memorial Gathering and Mass: 10 a.m. until the time of Mass at noon Tuesday, November 28, 2017, at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, with Reverend Wayne Stock officiating. Inurnment will follow in Calvary Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to: Alzheimer's Association or a charity of choice.
