SPRINGFIELD – Ruth T. Hemphill, 84, passed away Monday, September 21, 2026, at her home.

She was born in Ashland, Kentucky on June 10, 1942, to Jesse L. and Anna Geneve (Cunningham) Tucker. She married Marvin Hemphill on November 29, 1968, in Metropolis. He preceded her in death in 2004. She was also preceded in death by a step-daughter, Naoma Beth; step-sons, Christopher and James Matthew; granddaughters, Lisa Hemphill and Maria Uchtman; grandson, Dustin Hemphill; brother, Wayne Tucker; and sister, Rachel Berry.

Ruth graduated from Lincoln Land Community College in 1984 with an associate degree in nursing and worked as a registered nurse and trauma nurse specialist in the emergency room at St. John’s Hospital and later in home care. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

She is survived by her children, Tyna (Floyd) Newlan, Marva Uchtman, Ted (Vickie) Hemphill, Wynona (Chuck) McCall, Dynean Crow, John (Lori) Hemphill and Rebecca (Brian) Walton; 28 grandchildren; 55 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held from 5 – 7 p.m. Thursday, October 1, 2026, at Vancil-Murphy Funeral Home. A funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Friday, October 2, 2026, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Burial will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Missionary Fund for Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Springfield, Illinois 1st Ward.
