SPARTA – Vera Jean Monroe, 81, passed away Wednesday, April 2, 2025, at St. John's Hospital.

She was born in Chicago on January 12, 1944. She married Abraham Monroe on January 31, 1971, in Chicago. She was preceded in death by her son, William; mother, Ruth Ella Smith; father, James T. Hatchett, Sr.; twin sister, Barbara Jean; sister, Juanita Pullen; and brothers, Bill Hatchett, James T. Hatchett, Jr. and William Christopher Hatchett.

Vera enjoyed boat rides, skiing, sewing, playing cards; listening to music and being a nail technician. She cherished time spent with her family and friends.

She is survived by her husband, Abraham; children, Kenneth Norwood, Avontes (Michell) Monroe, Arkeitha (Michael) May; Alissa (Corey) Britt; daughter-in-law, Rosalind Penny; grandchildren, Camika Penny, Kwan Penny, NaKeshia Kirksey, Cameron Monroe, Avontis Britt, Samia Britt, Anara Britt, Ilan Britt, Aria Britt and Millie Monroe; ten great-grandchildren; sisters, Gwendolyn Smith and Delphine "Dee Dee" Moss; brothers, Edward "Penny" Hatchett, Jerry Hatchett and Garfield Hatchett; dear friend, Eileen "Till" Merideth; and many nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life will be announced at a later date.
